Turn ON the Lights!

Turn ON the Lights!

January 24, 2010 in Science, education by Estefania

Please turn on the lights! No, not those! The northern lights!

The northern lights, also known as the Auroras are beautiful streams of light that roam the night sky in northern or southern regions of the earth. This effect is thought to be caused by charged particles so the chance of visibility increases with proximity to the North Magnetic Pole.

What happened at the explOratium?

April 20, 2009 in Science by smashcaster

Smashcast visited the explOratium on Saturday April 18th to resume work on the Ice Stories Project. They learned even more about professional video production and had an opportunity to interview and interact with other Arctic Scientists.
Smashcast will be releasing a series of videos about the work of each scientist in the coming months, so stay tuned for more Ice Stories!

How Does Science Play a Role in Crime Investigations?

January 1, 2009 in Science by smashcaster

Hi everyone,

Since I recorded this podcast, the forensic scientists have determined that the body found was Caylee Anthony. They have yet to actually convict Casey Anthony for the crimes she was indicted for.
When I first heard of the crime's story, I noticed it was all over the news; there was hardly a single newspaper or news station that was not covering or had not already covered a portion of the alleged crime. However, after reading a few articles online about the case I noticed a lot of science was actually going into solving the case, and being the CSI and Law & Order fan that I am, I really wanted to figure out what all the science had to do with the case.
The podcast only covers a few point of the investigation…there is a LOT more that goes into crime investigation, but I couldn't possibly fit it all in a decently short podcast, sorry! :)

'Hope you enjoy it :) !

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

May 24, 2008 in Science by smashcaster

Eday
Hi everyone,

National Earth Day is April 22nd, and in honor of the day I chose to do a podcast that focused on an issue many people are concerned about: conserving our Earth. I researched a variety of different aspects on conserving our planet and found many biodegrading times, and ways to fight the negative effects we can have on the Earth and it’s health.

Hope you enjoy!

A Bacterial Infection in Hospitals?

January 26, 2008 in Science by smashcaster

Virus_2 In discussing podcast topics, Tommy told us about a new type of infection that has shown up in various states and hospitals. The infection has begun to affect many different types of populations and is in danger of becoming drug-resistant. This podcast took longer than other I am used to creating, but the information Tommy provided for me was exceptionally thorough and well put-together; I was merely his spokesperson in the matter.

Thank you!

How Do YOU Look At Color?

April 28, 2007 in Science by smashcaster

Sunrise_medium1 Perception is defined as the way you see things; your point of view. Recently the smashcasters traveled to the Exploratorium where we observed different scientific exhibits. One in particular caused our small group of  David, Monica, Bravo and Devonna to split into two groups in a difference of opinion.

The display showed one particularly colored circle enclosed by a series of others; the description instructed us to match one of the outer circles to the one in the middle. We couldn’t agree with which color matched the sample. Once we discovered the purpose of the exhibit, our group was challenged to think of others’ view points and the possibility that maybe we were ALL right.

Do Near Earth Objects Pose a Serious Threat?

January 27, 2007 in Science by smashcaster

Meteor
Here on our SMASHCAST website we have a number of interesting podcasts regarding science and outer space; "Red Red Alien Rover" by Carlo ft. Mini and Richard explains quite a bit about some outer space phenomena including aliens and unusual "red rain". The SMASHCAST team felt they wanted to incorporate more about space and its wonders into our site; this podcast was the perfect opportunity to do so.

This podcast was inspired by an Astronaut Luncheon that I, and a few other SMASH students, attended in Berkley on January 13th. Bravo and I highlighted some main points about Near Earth Objects (NEOs); NEOs include meteors and asteroids that could possibly hit Earth and cause severe damage. There was debate about which methods of deflection were more effective and who should “step up to the plate” in regards of funding etc. for these projects of detection and deflection.

Being my first podcast, I was very nervous to partake in the process; I was worried the process would be long, stressful and difficult. Surprisingly…it was. Thankfully, Bravo is a Podcasting Guru; thus guiding me through the entire process with more ease.

Tooth Trauma

in Podcasting, Science by Lone_Prophet

Bob_9
This new podcast will explain the things that people have said about coca cola and how it is bad for the human body. I’m pretty sure we have all heard one time or another from our parents or other adults that we should not drink coca-cola, but the effects are exaggerated when we are influenced by others not to drink it as Trevor was in his tooth trauma. We explain in this podcast how coca-cola can be bad for you, but is still ok to consume every once in a while. Hope you enjoy. Download teeth_and_coke2.mp3
